On this page, you will find information about different types of V-belts as well as the relevant length specifications.

When it comes to a V-belt, three different lengths must be considered: the inner length, the outer length, and the effective length. These lengths refer to the actual length of the belt material, not the diameter. Knowing the correct length is crucial to achieving optimal performance and operation of the V-belt. With the appropriate measuring tools and some patience, the length can be determined without difficulty. Special measuring gauges can be used to determine the exact length. If these are not available, a flexible tailor’s measuring tape can also help.

How to measure the different length specifications of the belt:

  • To measure the outer length (La), it is best to use the tailor’s measuring tape (or corresponding belt measuring gauge), which you place along the outside of the V-belt to measure its external length.
  • Similarly, you can measure the inner length (Li). In this case, you should place the tailor’s measuring tape along the inside of the V-belt.
  • To measure the effective length (Lw/Ld), cut the old V-belt open and lay it flat on a table. Use a tailor’s measuring tape to measure the belt from one end to the other. The measured length corresponds to the effective length.

The belt width is measured at the "back," which is the wider side of the belt.

The height is the measurement of the V-belt from the back side to the opposite highest point.
