Choosing the right bearing is crucial for the longevity and reliability of your machinery. Whether ball bearings, roller bearings, plain bearings, or housings—each type offers unique characteristics that make it ideal for specific applications. However, selecting the ideal bearing requires careful consideration of numerous factors to meet the specific demands of your design.
Since no universal rules exist, selecting the appropriate bearing is a multi-step process. Designers must consider and optimally balance numerous influencing factors.
Factors in Bearing Selection
1. Load Requirements
- Load: Roller bearings can carry higher loads than ball bearings. Full-complement roller bearings or full-complement ball bearings are particularly suitable for higher loads.
- Load Direction: Radial, axial, or combined loads require specific types of bearings.
- Speed: Ball bearings generate less friction and are thus better suited for higher speeds than, for example, axial bearings, which are designed for lower speeds. The number of rows of balls or rollers plays a significant role in the achievable speed range, with single-row bearings allowing higher speeds than multi-row bearings. Hybrid bearings (with ceramic rolling elements) can also withstand higher speeds.
- Temperature: The bearing cage, seals, and lubricants must be adapted to the required temperature ranges.
- Misalignment: Self-aligning bearings (self-aligning ball bearings or Spherical roller bearings) and adjusting bearings can compensate for misalignments to a limited extent, while rigid bearings only do so within the bearing clearance.
- Environment: Factors such as possible contamination as well as noise and vibration levels should be considered.
- Tolerance: Tolerance class requirements can be important for selecting the right bearing.
- Rigidity: Roller bearings and full-complement bearings offer high rigidity and minimize elastic deformation.
2. Size Requirements
- Shaft Diameter: For shafts with a small diameter (<10 mm), deep groove ball bearings, needle roller bearings, self-aligning ball bearings, or axial deep groove ball bearings are particularly suitable.
- Available Installation Space: For very limited installation spaces, needle roller bearings (Needle roller and cage assemblies, Drawn cup roller bearings with open end), deep groove ball bearings, or CARB toroidal roller bearings are ideal.
3. Installation and Removal Conditions
- Separate Assembly: Is it necessary to install the inner and outer rings separately?
- Tapered Bore: Is a tapered bore required or advantageous?
- Housing: Is the use of a bearing housing necessary?
Once these factors have been considered, all the necessary information should be available to select the optimal bearing for your application. Most characteristics can be determined from the bearing designation. However, keep in mind that there are no uniform standards for bearing designations.
